For pastors, priests, deacons, chaplains and ministers, the black clergy shirt is everyday work wear. It goes to Sunday services, hospital visits, funerals, weddings and community meetings. It has to look right, fit right and get through weekly washing. Here's what to look for, and why our Ferrecci Black Clergy Shirt with Tab Collar is built for the week, not just for Sunday.
What is a tab collar clergy shirt?
A tab collar clergy shirt has a banded collar with a slot at the front. A small white insert, the "tab," slides into it and shows as a white rectangle at the throat. It's the most common style of clergy collar across many denominations. You can wear it with the tab for services and formal duties, then take the tab out for a cleaner, everyday look.
What makes the Ferrecci Black Clergy Shirt different
- Removable white tab included: it's ready to wear out of the box, with no separate collar to buy.
- Convertible French cuffs: wear them with the included cufflinks for services and ceremonies, or button them for daily wear.
- Easy-care cotton blend: 60% cotton and 40% polyester, so it breathes like cotton but resists wrinkles and holds its deep black color. It's machine washable.
- Covered button placket: a clean, simple front with no buttons showing.
- Left chest pocket: handy for a pen, reading glasses or notes.
- Classic regular fit: room to move, and it sits neatly under a suit jacket or clergy blazer.

How to measure: for the neck, wrap a soft tape around the base of your neck where the collar sits, leaving room for one finger. For the sleeve, measure from the center back of your neck, over the shoulder, down to your wrist. If you're between sizes, size up.
How to wear a black clergy shirt
- For Sunday services: tab in, French cuffs with cufflinks, under a black or charcoal suit.
- For weddings and funerals: tab in, under a dark suit or clergy blazer. Black looks right in any formal setting.
- For hospital and home visits: tab in, cuffs buttoned, no jacket. Professional and approachable.
- For the office and errands: tab out. It works as a sharp black dress shirt on its own.
Care tips to keep it black
Wash it inside out in cold water with similar dark colors, and use a detergent made for darks. Tumble dry low or hang dry to keep the color deep and reduce shrinking. Take the tab out before washing, and wipe it clean with a damp cloth.
